National Novice Cross Country 2008

National Novice Cross Country, Ballyheise, 7 December 2008

And so to it, the last cross country endeavour for 2008. Following the harrowing experiences of Avondale and Abbeyleix, Ballyheise in the heart of Cavan was the location selected to host the National Novice XC.

Arriving at the arena in Ballyheise, we were confronted by a biting cold in the air and the sight of little kids bawling their eyes out, others with icepacks strapped to ankles and even one poor misfortunate being stretchered out with a neck brace and oxygen mask. It was clear we were a long long way from La Santa.

Sean Wall was the first of the Sportsworld participants to face the course. In the Under-19 race, a gruelling 6k race, in which young Waller admirably held his own, stepping up an age class to compete.

The ladies' novice race was the next to feature Sportsworld runners. At a distance of 3k, this race went off with a ferocious pace around the course and the Sportsworld team quickly got into their stride. Lorna Quinn, Mary Finn, Crona Brady, Stephanie Bergin and debutante Catherine O'Neill all put in strong performances. Both Lorna and Stephanie also ran on the Dublin side while Crona wore the green and gold of Meath.

The men's novice race was the last race of the day. The Sportsworld team of Ronan Merrick, Ed McEntee, Michael Cunningham, Colin Bolger, Paul Duffy, Paul Mitchell and Will Greensmyth faced into six laps of the course, by now well churned with knee-deep mud after the previous races. The Sportsworld gents dug deep and got around with some exceptional performances. Worthy of particular note is that of Ronan Merrick whose top form this season continued with a strong run to lead home the Sportsworld team, a performance benefitting perhaps from the extra sleep Mr Merrick gained from his alarm not waking him on time that morning. Colin Bolger returned to cross country racing with a fine run while Paul Mitchell in his first season of cross country running proved himself to be fully competent at conquering the hills of Cavan.

The last cross country race of 2008 behind us then as we take a brief sojourn over the Christmas season to recover. More cross country pleasures await in January and February...I can't wait.

Leinster Intermediate CC 2008

Leinster Intermediate - 9th November 2008

November 9th saw the annual meeting of the Leinster Intermediate CC Races, which was held in a mud bath at Heywood College Abbeyleix Co. Laois. We knew that it was going to be a tough day from the start, when the parking man stop us at the gate saying 'I think lads ya may park here, the auld field up above is gone soft', and can I have 5 Euro each as well!.

Well the parking man wasn't lying, the course didn't have a blade of grass which makes the performance of our Ladies team remarkable. The Girls team brought home the first gold of the cross country season. Well done to Aoife & Crona Brady, Stephney Bergan & Lisa Dowling. Aoife season is going from strength to strength & she took 1st place to boot. Even at that the twins weren't finished clearing the place out of medals. They also picked up Gold for Meath in the county competition.

The lads were up next and they had the pleasure of 5 laps in the cold icy blustery conditions. But what else would you be doing on your Sundays, I even heard one of the lads saying the harder the better. But I'm soft & I taught that its was a day beside the fire. Despite the Conditions Ronan Merrick & Ed McEntee battled on to claim 11th & 16th overall. Next in Micky Cunningham marched in 24th spot. Paul Mitchell, James Shanahan. Will & Paul Duffy also had a go & the team as a whole just missed out on a bronze medal. However lads our day will come again.

Dublin Marathon 2008

Congratulations to all those who did the Marathon on Monday, but especially well done to the 20 Sportsworld volunteers who had the tougher job of being marshals on Fortfield Road and Templeogue Road for the marathon. It was an early start on a Bank holiday for the volunteers with a job that involved standing for four freezing hours on a very cold day cheering on the Sportsworld runners and their competitors. The volunteers had to look out for the safety of runners with Sean Wall, Mary Finn and Trevor Lloyd having to deal with two injured runners, ambulances had to be called in both cases but the Sportsworld volunteers responded calmly and quickly. A very difficult job was done at Our Ladys school where buses had to be merged with the runners safely which Lucy Darcy, Stephen Willoughby, Gary Cregan and Sean O Byrne did brilliantly. All the volunteers had to deal with motorists, angry motorists, bad driving motorist (Orlagh Fleming) as well keeping spectators where they should be and at all times for the 4 hours ensuring the runners got a big boost as they headed in to the last 10miles. All the major Dublin running clubs supplied volunteers for the marathon but thanks to the below members Sportsworld was one of the biggest volunteer groups.

Orlagh Fleming, Rachel Morgan, Carol Lynch, Paddy Lynch, Sean O Byrne, Lucy Darcy, Stephen Willoughby, Gary Cregan, Elen, Michael Cunningham, Sean Wall, Mary Finn, Paul Duffy, Aoife Brady, Crona Brady, Judith Llyod, Trevor Lloyd, Paul O’Connell, Phil Kilgannon and Will Greensmyth. And a special Thanks to Michael Cunningham who organised the Sportsworld Marshals

Leinster Novice & Master CC 2008

Leinster Novice & Master race - 26th October 2008

The 26th October saw the annual meeting of the Leinster Novice & Master races in Avondale, Rathdrum Co. Wicklow & gave the chance for the up & coming sportsworld stars a chance to shine. The race was held in the scene grounds of Avondale house in weather of all seasons & there were some fantastic performances put in by all of sportsworld runners especially Crona Brady & Ronan Merrick.

First race of interest to sportsworld was the novice Women of Crona Brady, Stephanie, Ciara Foster, Susan McDonnell & Claire O' Reilly. The girls ran particularly well & were unlucky to miss out on the medals by 3 points. Susan, Ciara & Stephanie were together through out most of the 3K course & worked great as a team to finish 14th, 26th & 28th overall. However Crona stole the show to claim 5th place & based on this performance it will not be long till she will be running along side her sister in future races to come.

Next up the Novice Men were given there chance to shine. The race was 3 laps of a 2km course incorporating in what can only be described as a very steep hill that seem to go on forever. This hill will give me nightmare of years to come & most who saw it were left speechless by its length & steepness. However Ronan Merrick marked his come back to form with an outstanding 11th place. Ronan went to the front of the race early on & held his place with the leaders for one lap before dropping back a few places. Michael Cunningham also ran well & marched on to claim 21st spot overall. Michael is also coming back from injury & was delighted with his placing. Other notable performances were Paul Mitchell & James Shanahan who finished 44th & 45th respectively. Sportsworld claimed 6th overall in the team competition.

The masters women was the last race of interest to sportsworld. The girls ran really well & claimed 2nd spot with 22 points overall. Rachel Morgan ran a steady race to claim 5th place not to far behind Pauline Curley who won the race for Tullamore Harriers. Helen White & Kathleen O' Callaghan completed the team & finished 7th & 10th overall. Well done to all who ran :-)

Gerry Farnan Cross Country 2008

In the Gerry Farnan cross country race at a windswept Phoenix Park, Sportsworld competitors embraced the very difficult conditions to turn out some heroic performances. As the race serves as a trial for the annual veterans (IMAA) Celtic 4 Nations cross country international (to be held in Wales this year), seniors and juniors really just compete for personal pride. For many veterans it serves as the target race of the cross country season with athletes traveling from all corners of the island.

In 30 mph winds (though a dry course with nice autumn sun), the girls were first to face the music. Won easily by Wicklow’s Olympian the class Fionnuala Britton, Aoife Brady & Eimear Martin were a brilliant 12th & 20th respectively. Both athletes have improved massively this year, with the former’s strong work ethic of 70 mile weeks combined with a full time job giving her immense strength. Both ought to be very proud
However Carol Lynch and Helen White were the biggest success story for the girls as Carols 3rd place in W60 and Helens 4th place in W40 means that they are on the trip to Wales. Well done Carol and Helen.

The men’s race was equally tough but Mullingar’s Mark Christie made easy work of it winning the 5 mile cross country in 25.12. However the day belongs to Ed McEntee who battled all the way to secure a place on the M40 Ireland team. To the best of the author’s knowledge it’s the 1st time a man from our club has earned a green vest in any event. What makes the performance so much better is that like Jakub Splawski, he runs the Dublin Marathon next week. This would have been on the back of Ed’s mind throughout the race. Indeed there were other quality veterans watching the event that didn’t race it because of the marathon next week. Well done again Ed, you’ve done your club proud.
Other senior males that also ran were Packie Enright, Paul Duffy, Jakub Splawski & James Shanahan. All put in decent displays and the event will stand to them for the upcoming Dublin Senior and National Novice cross country races before Christmas.

Dublin Junior/Intermediate Cross Country 2008

Dublin Junior/Intermediate Cross Country 2008
Tymon Park
12/10/08

To start off we had the only junior member of Sportsworld racing for us. And boy did he do us proud. Sean Wall ran under 17/18/19 and had a great run. He finished in 3rd place overall.
Well done Sean.

Next we had our ladys Intermediate race 4k. The leading group pulled away very quickly in the early part of the race. Two of our girls Adele and Crona went with them. Adele moved up to second place and fought very hard and finished in 3rd place, Crona was the next home in 7th place followed by Ciara Foster and Claire O'Reilly (who are not long back in training) Our girls had a great run and brought a bronze medal home. Well Done.

To finish off we had Mens Intermediate race 8K. This race was highly highly competive. Our lads did very well. First home was Ronan Merrick, following by Jacob Splawski and Hugh Kearney.

Well Done to all.

Dublin City Marathon Volunteers

The Dublin City Marathon has made a request for volunteers to support the race on the day. There are a number of different roles, but Michael Cunningham has suggested that our club try and get 15 (or more) people to help out (there's free stuff for you, and increased profile for our club). We'll try and get some more specific information, but we just want to check the general level of interest. If you are interested in helping out can you please email us and we can approach the organisers.

Cross Country's Back!!

The dublin novice race on sunday kicks of the season (the sooner it starts, the sooner it ends - is one approach to managing these races), so best of luck to all our runners (remember your spikes and singlets).

For our non-novice lady runners, a sunday trip to carlow is on the cards, where the only extra piece of equipment required is the big handbag, so the expected array of prizes can be carried safely home.

Looking forward to seeing all the loot from the weekend next tuesday.

Kilmore Quay looks lost!

Kilmore Quay looks lost! Hiding on the very south eastern tip of Wexford this quaint little village is more like a hybrid of Cornwall and Connemara. Tudor thatching sits easily beside rugged shorelines and the ocean dominates every part of its character.
The Village is a contradiction, beautiful but with a history of tragedy dominated by maritime losses and a struggling fishing industry. An unlikely place then for a band of runners to race 10k, but inspiringly handsome all the same.

There was something almost ‘wild western’ about the posse of Dublin cars sweeping into the village. The locals looked perplexed. That initial excitement and urge to explore was quickly muted. A sunny September Saturday quietly refreshed the early risers. A stroll down to the harbour to watch the boats come in. Even the 2 sea lions looked lazy, sleepy and unhurried.

On to the sea shore and a beautiful memorial garden to all those lost at sea. When you read the names and their age it becomes more real. A calm day out to the horizon hid the deadly power of this moody ocean.

The peaceful mood led to a relaxed drive to the race start. Sportsworld represented about half the field. The red and white cut a powerful symbolism.
Registration was fun. The man in front of me refused to give his age. The middle aged, no nonsense matronly woman was having none of it …”I said how old are you?” He mumbled, muttered, and stuttered. She grew more agitated and in a loud voice said again …”How old are you?” He finally confessed to being 70. She said “70 exactly or older?” His dream of being mistaken for something younger was truly perished.

The warm up strides were dominated by a young local girl sprinting at the speed of light. Mr. Bolt would have been proud. We did wonder if she would survive the first 100 metres let alone 10k. Apparently she did!

The race start was just as relaxed. A man who had been club secretary for 105 years started the race. He had a chest full of pride and this was ‘his day’. We all smiled.

Off and a fast pace it was a twisty peaceful country road. It went up a little, down a little, but always pretty. Big propeller wind turbines competed for our attention. They might be ‘friendly’ but they sure do blot out the view. The locals encouraged us and even their dogs too. Marshals attended every corner even though we saw no cars to hinder our rapid journey. Soon, back into Kilmore and a fitting finish right by a graveyard that was set out to look like a grandstand!
The crowd at the finish were warm and hearty; it made the slog all the more worthwhile.

That night we dined in Keoghs. There was good food, great cheerful service and wonderful music. We ate together, sang together and went back to our hotel together. It’s what a club is all about. Nobody talked about ‘their’ race but everyone wanted to know how you did.

The walk home was cheerful and fun under the bright full moon. Then we went dancing. It was fun and it was straight out of JB Keane. It was Ireland of the 50s. Two local girls competed for the title of Dance Queen Diva. Their competitive spirit led to increasingly more ‘interesting’ moves. We remained unshaken!

Hardy souls were up early to take in the sea, the dunes and the air. Soon, we were saying our goodbyes. A plan and a trip was now a memory.
You see, a club is about much more than running, it is about people and people create the precious memories.
So, to my club, yet again, thank you for another super little adventure. But, to those who made it happen, Kilmore AC, Dermot and Rachael, we may not often say it but ‘thank you for the memory’ [Conor Kenny]

Longford Half Marathon

As if to motivate runners for the Longford marathon and half marathon Tony Mangan was breaking the world record in the registration hall for the longest run on a threadmill in 48 hours. He covered 251 miles and then went on to run in the marathon.

Runners where to need of this motivation as the half marathon course was changed from last year and although it can’t be described as hilly it certainly wasn’t flat with the men’s winning time 3 minutes slower then last year. We where treated to a nice cooling shower (or downpour) for the first couple of miles and then the sun came out for most of the race but there where plenty of water stations and locals giving out water along the route.

Although it was a challenging course Lucy D’Arcy came home in first place with a 20 second lead to claim her first Longford half marathon win, Mary Finn also claimed the 6th place prize with Orla Jordan a top ten finisher.

Sportsworld Trip to Kilmore, Co Wexford Update:

We have approx 40 travelling to Kilmore for the 10K road race on Sat 13th Sept. Please see below for info on the weekend.

Race:
The race begins at 17:30 on Saturday 13th Sept in Kilmore Village, which is located 3 miles from our Accommadation in Kilmore Quay. It is a 10K race around country roads on a flat course. Similar to Ballycotton without the hills, for those that have done Ballycotton. Registration is 10Euro on the day - No pre entry.
It is is the 75th Anniversary of the race...see www.kilmoreathletics.com

Accommadation:
We have block booked a small hotel and guesthouse alongside each other in Kilmore Quay.
Names: Saltees Hotel and Quay House Guesthouse.
Cost is 55 Euro PPS for hotel and 40 Euro PPS for Guesthouse on a B&B basis.

PLEASE NOTE:
As we have block booked, the bookings have had to be guaranteed by Credit Card with deposit paid. The guesthouse has been covered on Rachel's Credit Card and the hotel is covered on Dermot's for ALL rooms. In this respect, thank you to those that have paid to confirm their places, but can other's please pass on payment so that we can fully confirm numbers prior to Friday 30th August.
Thank you in advance for cooperation...

Anyone else interested???
For anyone else interested in traveling, there is a small amount of accom available.
But if full, we will always attempt to arrange accom in B&B or other closeby.
EVERYONE is welcome.

Directions:
Best way is to get on the M50 Southbound and follow Wexford/Rosslare Road.
Road is dual carriageway/motorway until past Gorey.
Follow onwards to Enniscorthy and again to Wexford.
When arriving at Wexford, you do not have to go into the town.
Follow signs for Rosslare going straight thru 2 roundabouts (Marked New Ross/Cork and Duncannon) and take last exit at 3rd roundabout onto Rosslare Road.
After approx 2K, take the right hand turn signposted Kilmore Quay (R739)
Pass thru Kilmore village after approx 12K and follow road onto Kilmore Quay about 3KM further on.
Hotel is on right and guesthouse on left as entering the village.
Depending on traffic, Wexford is about 1 hour 20 minutes and Kilmore Quay a further 20 minutes.

Travel on the day.
We are going to try and car pool as much as possible. So far, to make the most of the day, there are 3 cars leaving from Rathfarnham Shopping Centre at 9.15. Meeting in the Swiss Deli in the upstairs of the shopping centre at 9AM for coffee!. If people are interested in travelling at this time as either a passenger or if you can drive, please contact Dermot.

Kilmore Quay - Food & drinks after the race.
As well as being the only pub in the village (other than hotel), Kehoe's does very good food. We have booked a small room that they have upstairs that holds approx 17 people. Closer to the time we can look at staggering people heading in here for whoever wants food rather than beer!. Food is also served downstairs but the pub may be busy as it is the Saturday night. Alternatively there is a resteraunt in the hotel and also a good place called the Silver Fox in the village. We can arrange closer to the time depending on what people want to do. There was a local "DISCO" in the hotel, but we'll need to find out if it's still open for those that want to get the extra bit of exercise on the dance floor.

During the day, the Stella Maris (just down from the church) is the local community centre. While it may not look much from the outside, it does very good food and very nice home made deserts which are all very reasonably priced when compared to Dublin prices.

Sunday Run.
For those wishing to go on a Sunday run, just waiting for word back from local club members in Kilmore as to a good route. As the tide will be out on the morning, the run will hopefully incorporate a few miles on the local beaches....what more could you ask for??

Sunday
Depending on interest and weather on the day, boat trip(s) can be organised to see the bird sanctuary on the Saltee Islands. It is a spectacular sight with different types of birds and sea life...expecially a big colony of seals and with a bit of luck some Dolphins. Trip is approx 1.25 hours and will probably cost around 15 euro... If anyone interested, please let Dermot know to get an idea of numbers before enquiring. Boat(s) take 12 people max.

That's about it for now...further update will be sent out closer to the time.
Any queries, please contact Dermot/Rachel at club on Tuesday/Thursday or by email.

This info will be posted on the Sportsworld blog page, but please feel free to pass it on to anyone that hasn't received it.

Thanks.

For example if your standard is 13 (4 x 3 x 13 = 156 Seconds) and you run the 2 miles in 11.50 your handicap adjusted time will be 9.14, 11.50 less 156 seconds.

Race 1                Mens Standards 14 - 17

Race 2                Mens Standards 11 - 13 and Ladies Standards 2 - 16.

Race 3                Mens Standards 2 - 10.

Race 4                Mens Standards 18 - 30 and Ladies Standards 17 - 30.

Race 5                Open Race - mixed - no handicaps in this race which is for all non-current 2008 BHAA Members

Kevin English and his colleagues from the specialist running shop Runways will be in attendance in the registration area and on track to give advice on all running related matters and in particular running spikes.

Overflow parking will be available in Clanna Gael Fontenoy GAA Club.

National Track Santry 2008

Unfortunately due to injury and other commitments we only had 2 members of the Sportsworld Club attending Nationals this Year. Both Packie Enright ( otherwise Known as Packie MacIonnrachtaigh ) and Aoife Brady ran the 800 metres. Packie unfortunately missed out on making the Final but had a great time in heats of 2.08.41. Aoife ran in the Final on Sunday and finished in 4th place in the time of 2.16.57. Aoife had a great run and considering that she was injured all winter and is still coming into her own.
Well done to both of you.

National Intermediate CC Championships 2008

Race report by Eanna Cunanne

National Masters and Intermediate Cross Country Championships took place in near perfect conditions in Piercestown in Wexford, with Sportsworld athletes competing in three of the four races being held.

Lucy Darcy led the women’s masters race out on the first lap, and finished in 4th. Lucy, Helen White, Kathleen O’Callaghan and Breda Brown were silver medalists in the team event, with Lucy also winning a bronze county medal.

In the intermediate women’s event, Aoife Brady had a fantastic run to finish in the top 10 in only her second race after a season injured, while Crona Brady ran strongly in her national cross-country debut.

The intermediate men’s race was over 10K, with a long punishing hill to climb at the end of each of the six laps. In a field crowded with former prizewinners at novice and international junior level, it was telling that this hill progressively thinned out the pack on each circuit of the course. Despite this, Phil Kilgannon advanced through the field on every lap to finish with a county gold for Dublin. There were also great runs from Paul O'Connell, Ronan Merrick, Ed McEntee, Michael Cunningham, Martin Keenan, Paul Duffy and Will Greensmyth.

Spring Break

Back in 2006, we organised a great weekend away to the Edinburgh half
marathon. It gave everyone an opportunity to tackle a run at a
challenging but manageable distance, and left plenty of time for eating,
drinking and exploring the city. So with the Christmas holidays over and
everyone back to the day job, thoughts are naturally turning to getting
out of work and Ireland again as soon as possible, and we're proposing
to organise a similar trip for 2008.

Below is a list of half-marathons being run in Europe this spring. The
ones in early March unfortunately clash with the National cross-country
championships, but any of the later ones are doable. If you're
interested in coming along on this trip, please let me know your
preferred destination, bearing in mind that the object of the expedition
is not exclusively (or even) athletic.

Paris - Mar 2
Barcelona - Mar 2
Edinburgh - Mar 16
Lisbon - Mar 16
Prague - Mar 29
Berlin - Apr 6
Milan - Apr 6
Vienna - Apr 27
Gothenburg - May 17
